Minton hosts Jing'an District Labor Association seminar on labor law practice
On 10 September 2026, Minton Law Firm hosted a seminar for the Jing'an District Labor Association on how employers should respond after Shanghai's sick-pay rules lapsed on 15 August 2026. Nearly 40 member companies attended. Huang Chunhuan, head of Minton's labor law practice, set out the background to the lapse, the calculation of sick pay and medical treatment periods, and the amendments needed to internal rules, and took questions on sick-pay bases and the procedure for adopting rules, which drew a lively exchange with members.
Shanghai's rules on sick-pay entitlements lapsed on 15 August 2026, leaving employers asking how to respond. On the afternoon of 10 September 2026, to help employers deal accurately with the practical problems that followed the lapse and to strengthen the labor and personnel skills of their human resources staff, the Jing'an District Labor Association held a seminar on "Responding to and practising after the lapse of the city's sick-pay rules" in the main meeting room, hosted by Minton Law Firm.
The seminar was chaired by Zhang Weihua, secretary-general of the association, and attended by nearly 40 member companies. She began by thanking Minton Law Firm for hosting and welcoming the members who had come out in the late-summer heat. With the sick-pay rules no longer in force, employers faced new problems and practical challenges in workforce management, and understanding what had changed and how to handle the operational difficulties was a matter of common concern among members. She encouraged those present to make the most of the occasion, listen to the lawyer's analysis, take part in the discussion, and apply what they learned at work.
Huang Chunhuan, vice-chairman of the association and head of Minton's labor law practice, gave the presentation on "Responding to and practising after the lapse of the city's sick-pay rules". He first explained the background to the lapse, what the rules had provided and the main problems employers now face, then set out the key operational points on calculating sick pay and medical treatment periods and on amending internal rules. Drawing on typical cases, he explained the risks and common misconceptions that arise in day-to-day management. The content was closely tied to practice, supported by flow charts and worked examples of sick-pay design, and gave members a clear framework and practical solutions for responding to the change.
In the discussion that followed, members raised the questions that mattered most to them — how to determine the sick-pay base, the democratic procedure for adopting internal rules, and the management of sick leave — and discussed them with Mr Huang. The exchange was lively and the room was fully engaged. After the seminar the association organised a visit to the Duoyun Bookstore in Shanghai Tower, giving members a chance to relax after the session and to get to know one another better.
The event brought specialist labor and personnel advice directly to members in a small, focused format and was well received. Members said the content was detailed and close to practice, resolving their uncertainty about the lapse and offering guidance they could apply. Minton's labor law team will continue to support the association in spreading knowledge of labor law, helping human resources staff raise their standards, and contributing to harmonious employment relations.
